Demand Response

Demand Response – What’s the Buzz?

The North American Story

Since the turn of the century, regulators in North America placed additional pressure on utilities to improve reliability of supply as facilities near their design limits. Blackouts are reality where once it was thought to be virtually impossible. Without sufficient supply, consumers are urged to curtail load during critical times to avoid imposing rolling-blackouts in order that entire grid networks to not collapse with catastrophic failure.

Utilities are undergoing major changes to improve customer service and system reliability. However, the utility infrastructure has been in service for decades and needs repair or replacement as well as expansion. At the same time, regulatory reform, consumer awareness and climate change are adding additional pressure to utilities to secure reliable, environmentally friendly power. The traditional solutions are costly and time critical.

Today, DEMAND RESPONSE represents those programs and means by which regulators, energy retailers, and utilities are teaming up with consumers to “keep the lights on” by reducing consumption during critical periods. Unlike Energy Efficiency programs that focus on reducing the energy consumed while running, Demand Response focuses on encouraging and rewarding Consumers to lower their overall consumption during peak periods- period where the grid infrastructure is being strained to critical limits.

But there is one fundamental problem – while a few are inconvenienced and even compensated; the problem still exists. Not all Consumers are given the chance to participate, so are exposed to higher energy costs. Enertyr believes more can be achieved through “Interactive Demand Response”.
